Cristo Rey San José is a Jesuit, Catholic high school that empowers students from underserved communities in San José to be men and women for others who are prepared spiritually, academically, and professionally to complete college and who will become accomplished leaders committed to a lifelong pursuit of learning, faith, and justice. One Workplace became involved with Cristo Rey approximately 4 years ago. An old friend, Father Peter Pabst, left a program that he founded at a K-8 school for inner city kids. Peter, a Jesuit priest was chosen to start a work-study program for Cristo Rey and over the course of a few years he was able to get it organized and funded for operations.

Cristo Rey is the only school serving low-income students of downtown and East San Jose. The school founded the work study program so that students in groups of 4 could work five full days a month, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. to complete their work study. Their academic schedules are structured so that students work without missing any classes. This month we’re honored to have 4 students who currently attend Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School that will be joining the One Workplace family. The students will help support us in an effort to help us bridge the gap between coordination and operations through the work of some very specific task.

We believe that each individual employee here at One Workplace is a very significant piece to our organizations ever evolving puzzle. As we all work extremely hard to continuously transform the lives of others within different organizations by developing one of a kind work environments, our desire to incessantly transform the lives of those throughout our community is just as strong. Through this initiative we’re able to share with 4 students our company values to help prepare them for life after high school. The chance to donate our time, resources and make contributions that are of services to others is what we’re most proud of at One Workplace. We’re very fortunate to have the opportunity to play a role in the development of the bright futures for all 4 students’ of Cristo Rey.

Each of the 4 students will be working one day a week to add up to one full time person. In the time that each student spends working directly with us through the support of their work study program, the compensation earned during the course and time of their work study will go toward 50% of the cost of their schools tuition. This initiative teaches the students the value of hard work while simultaneously giving us the opportunity as an organization to actively give back to our community by encouraging education and strong work ethics within the youth. This is our chance to offer support while showing the students of Cristo Rey that all of their hard work toward a better tomorrow will never go in vain.
