Insight-Driven

DESIGNED TO SUPPORT PATIENTS + CLINICIANS

The Empath recliner is a crucial step forward in the health process – one developed entirely from real-world insights based on thousands of hours of observation and analysis. It is designed with consideration to the needs of both patients and clinicians as primary users.

Safety, Comfort+Connection

PATIENT + CLINICIAN AS PRIMARY USERS

Our research revealed that clinicians’ top concerns are keeping patients comfortable and safe while promoting overall quality of care. Empath is designed to meet these needs and help empower patients.

In the patient room.

Empath eases patient transfer, giving clinicians more opportunity to focus on quality interactions and human connection.

In an exam room.

Empath brings clinicians eye-to-eye to encourage communication, teaching and learning.

Patient Transfer

MINIMIZE STRAIN + STRESS

The move from bed to chair is a key moment in a patient’s healthcare journey. For clinicians, it’s an inherently difficult process due to patient limitations and the number of times these transfers are performed daily. Empath eases this process.

Empath offers molded, dual flip-down arms:

  • Cushioned to avoid injury, yet supportive enough to steady patients.
  • Contoured for easy grip when getting in and out of the chair.
  • Allow for easy access no matter where the chair is positioned in a space.

Integrated Design+Quality

REFINED AESTHETICS BALANCE CLINICAL + RESIDENTIAL

With crisp lines, matching curves and radiuses, thoughtful seam placement and integrated features, Empath has a design that’s visually pleasing – and makes the recliner easier to clean.

Empath is a holistic solution designed for the 24/7 rigors of healthcare. It adheres to stringent Steelcase standards for durability and performance, with a thorough static and dynamic testing process that exceeds industry standards. The result is exceptional ease of movement and a long product lifespan.

The Challenge

SAFETY IS A TOP CONCERN

Clinicians and patients both face risks to their safety and comfort – and traditional recliners fail to address the problem.

  • Nurses rank second for back injuries on the job. – American Nurses Association
  • One in three nurses and other clinicians said they have experienced an injury related to performing patient transfers. – Steelcase Health survey
  • Eighty percent of patient falls occur in the patient room, the site of most patient movement. – University of Pennsylvania Medicine study

Observation

Our team spent 2,000+ hours observing interactions around patient seating. We saw how conventional recliners caused undue strain and stress for clinicians and patients. And we found opportunities to improve the experience.

We also surveyed 300+ nurses and other clinicians on their needs and concerns in healthcare environments. Their responses echoed our observations: Throughout the healthcare experience, safety is important to all, and having the right tools is critical.

Design Insights

A BETTER HEALTH EXPERIENCE

Guided by these discoveries, we developed Empath as an important tool for clinicians and a step toward wellness for patients. Its user-friendly features help create a safer, higher-quality healthcare experience.
