CCSF STEAM Building

Groundbreaking Community College STEAM Building combining Sciences and Arts

The City College of San Francisco STEAM Building showcases how thoughtful architecture and interiors, powered by One Workplace’s furnishings, foster innovation and collaboration across disciplines of the arts and the sciences. This pioneering interdisciplinary design, created by SmithGroup, provides light-filled, flexible and open spaces that invite students and faculty to mix, experiment, and learn together.

Senior teams from SmithGroup, Kitchell CM, Rudolph & Sletten and One Workplace collaborated on a streamlined and flawless project delivery to CCSF.

Project Highlights

One Workplace supplied furniture and accessories for all four floors of the STEAM Building project. Rudolph & Sletten provided built-in free standing lab stations and some bar height collaboration stations.

The new 124,000-square-foot STEAM Building merges biology, chemistry, and anatomy labs with studios for ceramics, sculpture, drawing, and metal arts—across the four floors.

Art of the Sciences and Science of the Arts

One Workplace furnished dynamic study zones, faculty neighborhoods, collaborative classrooms, and specialized arts and sciences learning environments that adapt to various teaching styles and creative processes.

Corridors double as communal canvases and gathering spaces, encouraging student belonging and faculty-student engagement. The  transparency and spacious interior spaces intentionally leave room for expansion of thinking as well as future growth.

Flexible Learning Spaces Empower Student Success

Full-height glazing and sweeping color accents support wayfinding and highlight resource spaces, with vibrant walls inspired by Diego Rivera’s mural colors and the light spectrum.

Shared studios and the Innovation Center—act as versatile living rooms for STEAM students, enabling cross-disciplinary collaboration and flexible use.

Throughout the entire building, the integration of natural light, comfortable ergonomically supportive furniture, and colorful finish palettes create a welcoming backdrop for innovation and creativity.

Transformative Impact

The interiors have been thoughtfully designed and furnished to amplify student interaction, foster community, and provide spaces that support both structured learning and spontaneous collaboration.

From art galleries opening onto future campus plazas to serene rooftop spaces for reflection, every environment helps redefine the future of interdisciplinary education at City College of San Francisco.
