UCSF Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative & Integrative Medicine

Design and integrative practice come together to provide healing for children with chronic pain. UCSF worked with NBBJ to envision a welcoming environment to communicate healing from the entry throughout the space. Built by Dome Construction, our One Workplace Healthcare team furnished this engaging and inviting clinic.

The clinic's curved walls, spacious gathering spaces and magical niches offer delight and distractions to young patients. Whether underwater, in a redwood forest, or in front of a waterfall, the sense of wonder is emphasized by architecture, furnishings and technology that comfort and engage.
Views inside and outside, natural light and materials, curves and organic forms create a calm and comforting playground and minimize anxiety for patients and families. Bright colors, specialty pieces and custom banquettes were designed to flow with the envelope.
Colors, design themes, light and space continue organically through exam rooms, consult and therapy spaces to keep young patients engaged. Team rooms, meeting and conference spaces for staff offer respite and practical support.
The multisensory room with adjustable lights and sounds and a hanging swing, a climbing wall, interactive waterfall and other surprises in the clinic hallways use environment and technology to support a variety of therapies and create a space as holistic as the treatment offered.
